Michael Klauber has been an international wine merchant for more than 35 years. He truly knows how to find, source and serve superior wines.
Following studies at Cornell University School of Hotel & Restaurant Administration, Michael Klauber was a wine buyer in 1977 at Arnaud’s restaurant in New Orleans, and was personally responsible for the wine program at his family’s resort (The Colony Beach Resort, a historic Longboat Key property) when they received the “Grand Award” from Wine Spectator in 1982. He’s enjoyed the privilege of serving as a wine judge for international competitions and service as a board member and proud co-founder of the Sarasota-Manatee Originals, an organization boasting more than 50 independent restaurants throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties. In January 2017, we celebrated the 10th Annual Forks & Corks Food & Wine Festival, a five-day festival hosting dozens of international winemakers and owners, which Michael had the honor of co-chairing. Previously, he founded and developed the Florida Winefest and Auction, resulting in the production of two of the country’s premier wine and food events in Sarasota.
Today, Michael enjoys a hands-on ownership role in the daily operations of his boutique wine shop and adjacent restaurant. Michael’s On East earned its first-ever Wine Spectator “Best of Award of Excellence” Restaurant Award in 2017, following 25 consecutive years in the “Award of Excellence” Category. One of the prized aspects of the Michael’s On East wine program is the partnership with the 12,700 bottles inventory available through sister-concept Michael’s Wine Cellar.
As an independently-owned and operated restaurant and wine shop, Michael and his team are proud to showcase dozens of family-owned and operated wineries. In fact, a majority of our wines are sourced from individuals Michael has enjoyed the privilege of knowing personally for decades.
The ever-evolving wine program continues to primarily focus on domaine and estate-bottled wines. On an annual basis, Michael and his wife Terri lead clients on journeys to some of the most exotic and prized food and wine destinations to source new gems to add to the longevity of many portfolios we feature. These wine-focused travels have resulted in specialties in South Africa, South America, Spain and especially Bordeaux where we participate in En Primeur tastings many years.
During these wine-buying trips, Michael is able to personally meet and tour wineries around the globe, to discover and deliver new products to our Sarasota residents and visitors – as well as wine enthusiasts who purchase wines online through michaelswinecellar.com and Michael’s Wine Club!
