Whether you are new to wine or simply want to reacquaint yourself with the basics, this seminar could be just what you are looking for. Think of it was your own "Wine 101" class in Sarasota! Join us for a special three-part series hosted by Michael Green of Stacole Wines in conjunction with store manager Gary O’Brien of Michael’s Wine Cellar. Introduction to Wine – Three-Part Seminar Wednesday, July 23, Wednesday, July 30 & Wednesday, August 6 6:30 – 8:00 pm Each Wednesday Evening The first evening (7/23) will give you a solid understanding of the history of wines – from ancient times through current production – as well as information about the process of making wines, grape varietals (and their various clones or counterparts used in other parts of the world) and information about the various terriors of the world along with their importance. The second evening (7/30) will take you through the major areas of what is considered “old world” wine, including France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal. We will wrap up this series with the third and final evening (8/6) focusing on highlights of “new world” wines, which include domestic (US), South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. During each session you will taste up to six wines representing the overall theme of that evening. Cabernet Sauvignon, Faust, Napa Valley, 2011 $49.95 To express the complexity of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape and diversity of the Napa Valley, Faust seeks Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Agustin’s family vineyards in Rutherford and Coombsville, Napa Valley's newest appellation located in the eastern foothills south of Atlas Peak. Agustin’s relationships with growers in other Napa Valley appellations, such as Yountville, Mount Veeder, Atlas Peak, St. Helena and Rutherford, round out the wine with small lots from these spectacular mountain and valley terrors.  Faust is crafted at the Quintessa winery in Rutherford, a state-of-the-art winery with the most modern technologies. The grapes are hand-picked, double-sorted, gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel and French oak fermentation tanks. After cold-soak and fermentation, the must undergoes a maceration period that can last up to three weeks. Critical flavor, aroma and color compounds are extracted at this phase. Charlie and Lorna Wagner, with their son Chuck, launched this winery's legacy as a Napa Valley icon in 1972. Chuck is now the owner and winemaker, and has this to offer: "This wine exemplifies our style of Cabernet out of a great vintage: deep color, rich, concentrated and balanced. 2012 celebrates 40 years of producing our pride and joy, Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.” Cabernet Sauvignon “Stags Leap District”, Chimney Rock, Napa Valley, 2010  $72.95 Chimney Rock's 134-acre estate lies in the heart of the Stags Leap District, the first viticultural area in the United States to be approved based on the distinctiveness of its soils. With 28 distinctive vineyard blocks showing an array of different aspects, soil types, clones and rootstocks, this vineyard provides a diversity of flavors that are artfully blended to capture the holistic representation of our estate Cabernet Sauvignon. 2010 was a year of extremes. with greatly below average temperatures, they were on track for one of the coolest years of the decade. An extreme heat spike in late August and another in September resulted in some challenges and reduced the yields. The resulting wines are fairly elegant and balanced. Each featured wine will be available for special order with delivery scheduled for Friday, June 27.

Its tight, crisp and finely textured mouthfeel appeal to those with a preference for traditional Barolo. Again, this producer has done a good job managing the warmer vintage conditions." Top Value Wines: Wine & Spirits

Wine-Spirits-BestValuesHot off the press! Our team was pleased to read the “100 Top Value Wines of the Year” cover story in the June issue of Wine & Spirits this week. We were thrilled to see several of the smaller wineries and grower wines that we proudly offer at Michael’s Wine Cellar showcased. Amongst the best value wines compiled were these white wines, perfect for summer sipping! Roederer Estate Sparkling, from California’s Anderson Valley builds upon a 200-year tradition of fine winemaking that has made Roederer Champagne among the most sought-after wines in the world. The Roederer Estate Brut is crisp and elegant with complex pear, spice and hazelnut flavors. It is fresh and lightly fruity with great finesse and depth of flavor. A to Z Pinot Gris is a superstar white which is truly a delight. Pinto Gris thrives in Oregon, and A to Z shows how great this grape can be! The 2013 A to Z Pinot Gris has lifted aromas of honeysuckle, lemon zest, nutmeg and wet stone developing into richer aromas of lychee, beeswax and melon that add complexity to the nose. The attack is juicy and pure with bright citrus fruit flavors and mineral notes. Taut structure and a tight wire balance between ripeness and acidity frame a seamless mid-palate and lead to a long finish that ultimately ends crisp and clean with flavors of wet stone and jasmine green tea. A to Z Chardonnay presents a crisp style this is rich yet light. This is the type of Chardonnay you’ll enjoy drinking everyday.  Apparent immediately are aromas like kiwi, tangerine, white peach and quince are followed by deeper, richer aromas like honey, beeswax and melon. On the palate, the wine is equally complex and inviting. A juicy attack with great minerality leads to flavors that mirror the aromatics while yet more layers, like pear and toasted coconut, arise on the mid-palate. The concentration is balanced by firm acidity that gives the wine vitality and persistence with a long lingering note of clean wet stones. Tortoise Creek Viognier from France’s Languedoc region is a perfect choice for a Memorial Day picnic. So often Viognier is over oaked and loses it wonderful delicate charm. The Tortoise Creek  Viognier “Le Verger” is completely unoaked and therefore bright with lovely aromas of peaches, pears and honeysuckle that lead to a palate that is fresh and crisp but packed with fruit. Wonderful as an aperitif or with any fish or pasta dishes and excellent with a great chicken dish. “Le Verger” refers to the beautiful apricot orchard that is close to the vineyards that produce our Viognier. Tariquet Classic, from our good friend and importer Bobby Kacher of Robert Kacher Selections. Floral, elegant, it displays citrus flavors with a touch of exotic fruit, light acidity and is dry on the finish. Enjoy it poolside or as an aperitif. (This wine is a favorite of our Open House events.) Since 1912 Château du Tariquet has been home to the Grassa family. They first gained notoriety for Hélène and Pierre Grassa’s Armagnac, which is still produced today. In the 1980’s their children, Maïté and Yves, broke all the rules by producing their first still wines, a blend of Ugni Blanc and Colombard. A few years later, they heavily planted and created untraditional blends such as Sauvignon-Chardonnay and Chenin-Chardonnay and word of mouth is how the Tariquet taste and fashion was born! Gift of Crios for Mother's Day

Crios Rose WineIn a country dominated by male winemakers, Susana Balbo stands out not only for her gender, but for her incredible skill and experience. She has been making wine since she earned her enology degree in 1981, and she has probably produced a wider variety of wines than any other winemaker in Argentina. Susana was the first Argentine winemaker to be hired as a consultant to make wine outside of Argentina. She has made wine in Australia, California, Chile, France, Italy, South Africa, and Spain, and she spends a month each year in a different wine region of the world studying with local winemakers and growers. After 25+ years of winemaking, Susana Balbo has a strong sense of what she wants from her wines. From every harvest, she creates the grandest possible wines under her Susana Balbo label. To achieve this, she makes a rigorous selection of the finest barrels prior to making her final blends, dividing them into the parents (reserve level wines) and offspring or "crios". Wines under her Crios label display ripe fruit flavors, excellent balance and concentration, and are meant to be enjoyed in their vibrant youth. After 22 years of winemaking, Susana Balbo has a strong sense of what she wants from her wines. From every harvest, she creates the grandest possible wines under her Susana Balbo label. To achieve this, she makes a rigorous selection of the finest barrels prior to making her final blends, dividing them into the parents (reserve level wines) and offspring or "crios." Double Points on Tequila

In honor of Cinco de Mayo celebrations, Michael's Wine Cellar is offering Gulf Coast Connoisseur Club members DOUBLE POINTS for all tequila purchases on Mondays in May 2014. (Offer valid for in-store purchases only.) Here's a quick primer on the holiday, compliments of Britannica.com: Cinco de Mayo - Tequila SpecialCinco de Mayo, ( Spanish: “Fifth of May”) , also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, national holiday in Mexico in honour of a military victory in 1862 over the French forces of Napoleon III. When in 1861 Mexico declared a temporary moratorium on the repayment of foreign debts, English, Spanish, and French troops invaded the country. By April 1862 the English and Spanish had withdrawn, but the French, with the support of wealthy landowners, remained in an attempt to establish a monarchy under Maximilian of Austria and to curb U.S. power in North America. On May 5, 1862, a poorly equipped mestizo and Zapotec force under the command of Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza defeated French troops at the Battle of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City; about 1,000 French troops were killed. Although the fighting continued and the French were not driven out for another five years, the victory at Puebla became a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign domination. The city, which was later renamed Puebla de Zaragoza, is the site of a museum devoted to the battle, and the battlefield itself is maintained as a park. The day is celebrated in Mexico, especially in Puebla, with parades and speeches. In some cities there are reenactments of the Battle of Puebla. Cinco de Mayo has also become a festive holiday in parts of the United States with large Mexican American populations, including many cities of the Southwest. Celebrations in the United States often extend beyond the actual day to encompass an entire week, with parades and festivals that include music, dancing, and food. Rare Whiskeys

Barterhouse OldBlowhard Rare WhiskeyMay 2014 Update: As we stated from the release, once these "orphan barrels" are gone, they are gone. This week, the whiskey-loving members of our team are absolutely behaving like kids in a candy store. We've just received two very special - and very rare - whiskeys which are available for a limited time (due to the extreme demand for these bottles and the limited release) in our Sarasota retail store, online through www.michaelswinecellar.com and at the Michael's On East Lounge. The team at Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Co. prides themselves in finding forgotten barrels of rare and delicious whiskey, hidden away and long forgotten in the back of their rickhouses and distilleries. Each of these rare whiskeys are crafted with care, quality and fun in Tullahoma, Tennessee.   Barterhouse 86% Corn, 8% Barley, 6% Rye Barterhouse—a sly fox who says it twice as fast, with a spin, and makes it stick. An adventurous character with a taste of warm spice, biscuit and buttercream, and a finish of spice and brown sugar. At 20 years old and 90.2 proof, Barterhouse is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon that is devilishly delicious. This whiskey stock was produced at the new Bernheim distillery (post-1992) and was found in Stitzel-Weller Warehouses in Louisville, Kentucky. Although Barterhouse may have limited future releases, it’s best to purchase this rare bottle today. Old Blowhard 86% Corn, 8% Barley, 6% Rye Old Blowhard—puffed up, unapologetic with swagger, this bold 26 year old is full of flavor and personality. Old Blowbard is an incomparable 90.7 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon. The taste is exuberant and rich with undertones of smoke and honey with a gentle finish, dry, spicy with a hint of orange peel. This whiskey stock was produced at the old Berheim distillery (pre-1992) and was also found in Stitzel-Weller Warehouses in Louisville, Kentucky. Old Blowhard was recently released for its one and only release. Once it’s gone, it’s gone—once again to become but myth and legend….

For Molly Klauber and Ethan Biter, it has been a fairly tale romance since they first started dating in 2012. On April 5, 2014, a perfect night in the Courtyard of The Ringling Museum, Michael Klauber proudly walked his little girl (who happens to also be the Assistant General Manager at Michael's On East) down the aisle. With exquisite details from start to finish, the #KlauberBiterWedding was a grand affair with lovely, thoughtful touches throughout the evening as Molly and Ethan celebrated their love for one another with close family and friends. During the cocktail reception and dinner courses that evening, wedding guests enjoyed a remarkable selection of wines carefully choosen by Michael. 90 Point Bourgogne Chardonnay

Included in Elsa's featured portfolio was her 2011 Bourgogne Chardonnay which recently scored 90 points from The Wine Advocate/eRobertParker.com! Wine Advocate #211 - February 2014 A killer wine from just outside the appellation of Meursault, the 2011 Matrot Bourgogne Chardonnay (100% barrel-fermented Chardonnay) is used by Matrot to break in new oak casks before his more expensive and prestigious Meursaults go into barrel. Medium to full-bodied with surprising intensity, the it is a sensational generic white Burgundy to consume over the next several years. This fabulous buy is a rare find from the super-premium world of Burgundy.  Click here to purchase this "killer wine" now from our online store.  BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY  Grape Variety: Chardonnay.  Average age of the vines: 30 years.  Pressing of the entire grapes in a pneumatic press.  Indigenous yeasts.  Fermentation for 8 to 10 weeks in oak barrels, 15 to 20 % of which are new.  Temperature control (18-20 °C).  Maturing on lees for 11 months.  “Bâtonnage” (stirring up of the lees) depending on the vintage.  Complete malolactic fermentation. The grapes for this Chardonnay are picked near the appellation of Meursault. It is fruity and round and can be enjoyed as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to charcuterie, chicken and grilled fish. A great wine to enjoy with friends.

PINOT GRIGIO GRAPE COMPOSITION: 100% Pinot Grigio ORIGIN: Mendoza, Argentina TASTING NOTES Yellow color with green tones. Very delicate. Ripe fruit aromas such as pears, apple, melon and some notes of tropical fruit like pineapples and banana. Creamy, good balance, nice acidity. Long and fresh finish. CHARDONNAY GRAPE COMPOSITION: 100% Chardonnay ORIGIN: Mendoza, Argentina TASTING NOTES Soft yellow with green tints. Notes of apple, pear, melon, honey and various hints of biscuits. Wide palate with good acidity. Also noted are citrus flavors with peaches and apple. An exceptionally harmonious and balanced finish. MALBEC GRAPE COMPOSITION: 100% Malbec ORIGIN: Mendoza, Argentina TASTING NOTES Violet-intense purple, concentrated and bright. A complex nose with varietal notes of ripe fruits, figs, prunes, jam and raisins. Also tones of vanilla, tobacco, coffee and chocolate due to partial oak aging. Full-bodied, with sweet tannins and well balanced with nice acidity. A lingering and complex finish. CABERNET SAUVIGNON GRAPE COMPOSITION: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon ORIGIN: Mendoza, Argentina TASTING NOTES Ruby red with purple highlights and good intensity. A bouquet of black cherries, prunes, gooseberries, blackberries and spices. Full-bodied, and rich. Balanced with fine tannins. A long and persistent finish.

Michael's Wine Labels Win Addy

Michaels Private Label WinesIn February 2014, AdFed Suncoast held their annual ADDYs competition, awarding honors for branding, website design and mobile/desktop apps to local agencies and organizations. What would this contest honoring creativity have to do with wine? It just so happens our friends at boostDFM, who designed the Michael's Wine Cellar brand and corresponding label for Michael's private label wines, took home an astounding 29 ADDYs as part of the recent competition! Our team was thrilled to see the bottle graphics created for Michael's private label Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon win a gold ADDY and an AMY (Best in Category). We are certain that these estate-bottled, organic wines from Familia Zuccardi's prized Santa Julia Winery in Argentina would taste just as perfect with any design treatment on the bottle, but we do love the elegant, sharp look that pairs perfectly with these sophisticated wines!
