NEW ARRIVAL! Sancerre, Domaine Vincent Delaporte, FR, 2012 $23.95 This new arrival comes complete with tasting notes from our Wine Cellar Manager Gary O'Brien: The nose of this vintage is ripe melon fruit, with hints of apricot and mango intermixed with floral aromas. The palate is clean, wet stone and flint minerality with nuances of citrus and gooseberry. The mouthful is rounder than I remember but balanced with the acidity offers a pleasing finish that lingers moderately. When I thought about what I might like to have this wine with, the first though that jumped out at me was sushi, which is notoriously difficult to pair wine with. I think that the acidity will cleanse the palate, similar to what the pickled ginger does, and that the richness of the fruit and minerality will nicely balance with the fresh fish. If you are not a sushi fan, this obviously will pair very well with other seafood dishes and lighter meat dishes. And honestly, it drinks pretty darn well by itself too! Whiskey Festival Details

Whiskey Glasses It's hard to believe but in just one month twenty-five distillers and professional brand ambassadors will travel to Sarasota to serve over 200 whiskies from Scotland, England, Ireland, France, India, Australia, Japan, and the United States.  Whiskey Obsession is one of the largest whisk(e)y festivals in Florida and will held March 27 and 28, 2014 on property at Michael's Wine Cellar and the Michael’s On East Ballroom. We are proud to host this popular event, created and produced by Turner C. Moore. The festival will kick off this year with the Panel of Whiskey Experts on Thursday, March 27, 2014, featuring eight distillers and ambassadors each presenting their favorite spirits.  The panel occurs in Michael’s Wine Cellar and is limited to forty guests; the cost of this event is $45 per person.  The panelists include: David Blackmore, Ardbeg and Glenmorangie Master Brand Ambassador Gary Keimach, Gordon & MacPhail Senior Vice President David Laird, Balvenie and Glenfiddich Brand Ambassador Jimmy Russell, Russell’s Reserve and Wild Turkey Master Distiller Raj Sabharwal, Amrut and English Whisky Company Brand Ambassador James Wills, Kilchoman Brand Ambassador Al Young, Four Roses Brand Ambassador Louisa Young, Arran Senior Brand Manager The grand tasting will occur on Friday, March 28, 2014. VIP entrance begins at 6:30 pm and general admission at 7:30 pm.  (Last pour is at 10:30 pm followed by an after party at our friends at Made Restaurant in downtown Sarasota.) Jura Diurachs' Own Scotch

 Jura Scotch Whiskey lovers may have already recognized our new Wine Cellar Manager Gary O'Brien from attending the store's whiskey tastings in the past as well as the inaugural Whiskey Obsession Festival in 2013. He's very tuned into our Scotch and whiskey offerings and recently brought in a new 16-year old single malt scotch from Isle of Jura. This Scotch helps fill a gap in mid-to-older scotches at a great price.  It also brings in a new region of Scotland! Jura is located Southwest of Scotland and Northeast of Islay, roughly due west of Glasgow. This is one of my personal favorites, and I hope you'll enjoy picking up a bottle from the store or sipping Jura by the glass in the restaurant.
Turner Moore, creator and producer of the Whiskey Obsession Festival, also weighed in about the store's new addition: Gary - You are right. Jura is in the Inner Hebrides and Islay’s neighbor, just a bit Northeast, very scenic with its iconic “Paps” hills visible for miles.  The other Jura releases I’ve tasted have a distinctly maritime character but without the predominantly peaty/ smoky flavor of many other island whiskies.  Also, their ambassador Louisa Young will be joining us at the Whiskey Obsession Festival.

Fisher Vineyards Tasting Wines

Fisher Vineyard Tasting We are thrilled to welcome Cameron Fisher to Michael's Wine Cellar on Wednesday, February 19 to host a special wine tasting featuring her family's Sonoma County and Napa Valley wines. The walk-about tasting event with Fisher Vineyards will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and reservations are required. $35 per person. Click here for reservations. In addition to Fisher Vineyard's Unity Rosé, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the following wines will be featured: Mountain Estate Vineyard, Chardonnay SONOMA COUNTY On our Mountain Estate, these vines grow on a steep, rocky, Northeast-facing slope at an average elevation of 1,300 feet, receiving early morning sun and minimal exposure to hot afternoon temperatures. Planted in 1999, this vineyard has proven ideal for the gradual ripening and maximum maturation of Chardonnay grapes. Tasting Notes: Beautiful aromatics of citrus blossom, citrus fruit and lemon custard. On the palate this wine opens beautifully into a honeyed, full-bodied expression of mountain terrior, showing both rich phenolic content and minerality. Porter Wine Dinner

Porter Vineyards Tom and Beverly Porter of Porter Family Vineyards from the Coombsville region of Napa Valley will host an extravagantfive-course wine dinner, showcasing inventive dishes designed for their celebrated wine portfolio. Please call 941-366-0007, ext. 229 to be placed on the waiting list.  $95, plus tax and gratuity Tom Porter grew up in Adrian, Michigan with an intense interest in science and technology. “My father was a chemist, affording me access to the chemicals necessary to build rockets in the basement. My journey to electronics occurred after a few explosions on the launch pad and my father rather forcefully suggesting that perhaps I should consider applying my energies to some other science projects.” Following graduation from school, Tom enrolled at Michigan Tech in the electrical engineering program. In June 1968, one week after graduation, he drove to Rochester, Minnesota to begin what turned out to be a 27 year stay at IBM.  At IBM, Tom had the opportunity as an engineer to work on a broad spectrum of exciting projects including the development of IBM’s first digital modem and the automated ticketing system for the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (Bart). His proudest accomplishment was a patent for the mechanics inside the 3.5 inch floppy disk that ultimately became the industry standard and shipped in every PC for nearly 15 years. In 1973, Tom married his soul-mate, Beverly and they now have three children and four grandchildren. In 1978, IBM offered Tom an engineering management position that started a new career in technology management, spanning 25 years and three companies. Most recently he was CTO and Executive Vice President of Product Development at Seagate Technology responsible for Technology Strategy, Technology Development, Product Development, and Advanced Research. In 2005, Bev and Tom purchased a 20 acre vineyard in Napa, California and constructed a 17,000 square foot underground cave to house the winery. “This resulted in a most wonderful unintended consequence as their daughter (Heather), her husband (Steven), and their son (Tim) decided to move to Napa and join us in the development of Porter Family Vineyards.” Bev and Tom have established a family foundation that supports children in need. Over the past 10 years the foundation has helped build a children’s home in Tanzania, Africa, supported a teen group in Sarasota and aided troubled kids in Boston. Each winter when the grape harvest is done, the new wines are resting in barrels, and the cold rains come to California, Tom and Bev head for Longboat Key for “The Season” – a fortunate opportunity for guests of this upcoming wine dinner at Michael’s Wine Cellar! Gary Obrien Wine Cellar Manager It's been busy January, full of special Bordeaux tastings, new product arrivals, wine dinners and Forks & Corks festivities at Michael's Wine Cellar and throughout Sarasota. Thus, we most apologize for our slightly tardy formal introduction to the newest member of Michael's experienced and knowledgable team: Gary O’Brien, who started in early January as Wine Cellar Manager. A native of Tallahassee who has lived in Naples, Savannah, New York City, Birmingham and Cincinnati, Gary O’Brien found his way to Lakewood Ranch, Florida in 2009. His wife Allison is a general dentist “out east” in Lakewood Ranch where they reside with two four-legged, furry children: a 12-year-old Golden/Chow mix named Ritz and a 10-year-old tabby cat named Ginger. You may recognize Gary as an attendee or volunteer from many of the food, wine and spirits festivals we’d had the pleasure of hosting on property and in the community. He’s also known to enjoy a cigar or two when hitting the links or participating in a poker tournament.  Gary has taught numerous wine education classes, specialized comparative tastings and seminars on Riedel stemware. (And he is anxious to present special programs for local wine collectors and Gulf Coast Connoisseur Club members as part of his new position with our store.) At Michael’s Wine Cellar, Gary is looking forward to utilizing his background in fine wine sales, retail sales and sales management, coupled with his personal passion for wine and food.  With additional professional experience in finance, project management and information technology, we know he will be a great fit and welcome addition to our team!

Participating in regular conference calls with top dogs from other legendary restaurants across the nation, reading and contributing to industry publications and blogs, and - most importantly - seeking input from our loyal guests. Earlier this month, Michael was chatting with long-time friend and Restaurant regular Terry McKee of NUOVO Salon when the conversation turned to a few specialty bottles Terry was interested in enjoying at Michael's On East. Michael was pleased to oblige with the addition of Catdaddy Spiced Moonshine and TRU Organic Gin. Catdaddy Spiced Moonshine is an ultra-smooth spirit that's handcrafted in small batches, made from corn and triple distilled in North Carolina by Piedmont Distillers. Catdaddy is infused with a proprietary blend of all natural spices and flavors to create a spicy meets sweet taste. Only the Founder and Master Distiller know the exact recipe which created its one-of-a-kind flavor, but most people taste hints of vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. True to the roots of Moonshine, Catdaddy is inspired by traditional moonshine recipes and distilling processes, made from corn and is handcrafted in small batches. Friday, January 24, 2014 Domaine Ehrhart & Maison Ambroise – French Wine Dinner, 7 p.m. Michael’s Wine Dinners are spectacular events featuring visiting winemakers as host to extravagant five-course feasts designed to complement a specific winery or portfolio. On Friday, Jan. 24, Robert “Bobby” Kacher, a close friend of Michael Klauber, will bring winemakers and owners from two of his top wineries to the series of Forks & Corks events. Kacher will be joined by Corrine and Phillipe Ehrhart of Domaine Ehrhart and Bertrand Ambroise from Domaine Bertrand Ambroise during the elegant exploration of two of France’s most famous wine regions, Alsace and Burgundy. $95, plus tax and gratuity Reservations required: 941-366-0007, ext. 224 Domaine Ehrhart is a small estate of almost 52 acres located in the village of Wettolsheim, about five kilometers from Colmar. Looking out the back door of Philippe and Corinne Ehrhart’s winery, guests enjoy a view of Alsace’s noble vineyards of Steingrubler, Rosenberg, Brand and Hengst. The Ehrhart family has been making wine in this region since 1725. Two generations ago Philippe Ehrhart’s grandfather Eugene began employing organic farming methods, which he believed would help him produce better wines. Philippe and Corinne continue to farm their vineyards with the same strong commitment, and today all of the wines of the domaine are certified organic by the French government. The domaine of Bertrand Ambroise was established in the late 18th century in the village of Prémeaux-Prissey, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Today the estate has expanded to 42 acres which are worked diligently by Bertrand and his family. Bertrand produces some of the finest examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Burgundy. His genuine passion and his detail work in the vineyards and the cellar have created a worldwide demand for his wines.
