Wine for the 5th Day of Christmas: Chablis & Bordeaux

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree But wouldn't it be lovely if your true love also sent you unbelievable French wines? Chablis, Isabelle & Denis Pommier, FR, 2009 $25.95 Domaine Denis Pommier is a small estate based in the village of Poinchy just west of Chablis. In 1990 Denis Pommier inherited from his grandfather, 2.5 hectares of established vineyards in Chablis AC, and 1er cru Beauroy and Fourchaume. Denis also acquired small parcels of land from his aunt in Petit Chablis and Chablis AC and has added an excellent holding of old vines 1er cru Cote de Lechet. The domaine now covers 13 hectares where Denis, and his wife Isabelle, make wonderfully pure Chablis as well as a tiny amount of Pinot Noir Bourgogne rouge from very low yielding vines more than 50 years old. His wines right across the range show great purity and offer remarkable value. Domaine de l'A, Cotes de Castillon, FR, 2009 $39.95 This opulent 2009 from the up-and-coming appellation of Cotes de Castillon (a treasure-trove of values east of St.-Emilion) is the home property of the well-known winemaking consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt. Dominated by its Merlot component (70%), it offers up notes of mocha, roasted coffee, sweet kirsch, black currants and hints of wood smoke as well as caramels. Pure and plump with silky tannins, impressive concentration and good balance, this hedonistic 2009 should drink well for a decade. - The Wine Advocate, 91 Points
