Rosé & Red Wine for Valentine's Day

This week, Michael Klauber will be visiting Sarasota's ABC 7 to share a few suggestions regarding rosé and red wines for Valentine's Day with viewers of Suncoast View. Tune in at 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 12 as Michael "sabers" a bottle of sparkling and explains his wine suggestions as Michael, Linda, Bobeth and Stephanie taste the wines with decadent chocolate. Here are just a few of Michael's personal recommendations for your sweetheart: Rose, Domaine de la Petite Cassagne, FR, 2013 $9.95 Petite Cassagne Rose Wine A blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. Super fresh and bright, this summer sipper displays deep flavors of strawberries, minerals and sweet herbs. Domaine de la Petite Cassagne is located four kilometers from the village of St Gilles on south/south-eastern exposed slopes of the Costières de Nîmes. The soils here are characterized by cailloux deposited by the Rhône River centuries ago. "A pure style, with watermelon seed, rose water and white cherry notes lined with a tangy hint and backed by a lingering stony finish." -Wine Spectator Sparkling “Rosa Regale”, Banfi, Brachetto d’Acqui, IT, 2011 $18.95 Rosa Regale In 1979, John and Harry Mariani, family Proprietors of Banfi Vintners, acquired a mid-18th century winery, known as Bruzzone, revitalized it and renamed the facility Banfi Piemonte. Here, with the same detailed care as a century ago, our skilled winemakers produce "Rosa Regale" Brachetto d'Acqui D.O.C.G. This rare Brachetto, a semi-dry, red sparkling wine cherished by the courts of Europe over two centuries ago, owes its reincarnation to Banfi. Rosa Regale is created in one of Italy's smallest production zones, the Brachetto d'Acqui Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, commonly referred to as DOCG. It is crafted from 100% Brachetto grapes grown exclusively at the La Rosa Vineyard in the town of Acqui Terme located in the Piedmont region of Italy. The label features a single red rose, representing the wine's origin from this single vineyard La Rosa estate. Rosa Regale's quality comes from the vineyards. However, since this is a sweet, aromatic wine, winemaking techniques are also essential to preserve the grapes' elegant scent. After a careful harvest, the must is allowed to macerate on the skins for 2 to 3 days, thus resulting in a limited actual alcohol content. In this way, a deep beautiful pink color is obtained, thanks to the time spent in contact with anthocyanin-rich skins. The pressing technique is fundamental to the final result: "soft" and elegant. Rosa Regale is produced using the Charmat process or Metodo Italiano (Italian Method). This method forces the second fermentation to happen in large stainless steel tanks prior to bottling, rather than in the bottle like the traditional méthod champenoise. This process is best used on sparkling wines that are meant to be enjoyed young and relatively fresh. Red Blend "The Chocolate Block" Boekenhoutskloof, Franschhoek, ZA, 2012 $32.95 Chocolate Black Wine The Chocolate Block has a rustic, earthy bouquet with a touch of saddle-leather and Provencal herbs. The palate is smooth and rounded on the entry and is armed with crisp acidity to cut through that plush dark berried fruit interlaced with rosemary, white fennel and white pepper. Very svelte and harmonious towards the slightly oaky finish and demonstrating good length, The Chocolate Block is a well-crafted Rhone(ish) blend from Mark Kent and his team. Founded in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is one of the oldest farms situated up the "Valley" in the Franschhoek foothills. Marc Kent is the winemaker, cellarmaster, and part owner of this homestead and wine farm. "Toasted savory and anise notes lead the way, backed by soft plum and blackberry paste flavors. A toasty hint holds sway on the finish. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Cinsault and Viognier. Drink now." -Wine Spectator Heart Corks Remember, Michael's Wine Cellar will be open 10 am - 6 pm on Valentine's Day this year, Saturday, February 14, 2015. French Wines for Valetine's Day

What will your Valentine LOVE this year? Classic old world wines from Bordeaux, Rhone Valley and Languedoc, a true Champagne or bright Rosé ? In fact, our Wine Cellar associates have selected a few suggestions for those interested in a "Tour of France," one of the world's most romantic destinations and greatest wine-growing regions! Champagne "Rose", Veuve Clicquot, FR, NV The Veuve Clicquot Rosé is a true symphony of wine, orchestrated by Madame Clicquot in1818 when she blended, for the very first time in Champagne history, a selection of the finest black and white grapes. With this wine-making method, consisting of blending red wines and white wines, Madame Clicquot reinvented rosé wine, breaking away from the other champagne Houses whose rosé wines were traditionally produced by macerating black grapes in colourless juice. Sauvignon Blanc, Domaine Tariquet, Cotes de Gascogne, FR, 2011 Offers an especially soft, lush, ripe melon-scented and –flavored variation on its grape, with suggestions of cucumber, dill, and mint. Cotes de Nuits Villages, Bertrand Ambroise, Cote de Nuits, FR, 2010 Featuring low-toned and lightly cooked blackberry and beetroot – also offers attractively toasted nut accents; a sufficient sense of primary juiciness to assuage its slight finishing chew of tannins; and a salinity to stimulate salivation. Serve it over the next 4-5 years. - The Wine Advocate Remember, Michael's Wine Cellar offers free shipping or local delivery on all orders of $100 or more.
