Pinotage

Pinotage: South Africa's Grape Varietal As explained by our friends at Wine Access, Pinotage is a recent addition to the wine world, having been created in South Africa in 1925, by Stellenbosch University Professor A.I Perold. Perold crossed the Pinot Noir and Cinsaut grapes with the aim of acquiring the best qualities of both parents: classic Pinot Noir flavors with a bountiful crop from sturdy, disease resistant vines. Pinotage is a versatile and food-friendly wine. If you haven't had the opportunity to explore food pairings at one of our specialty South African wine dinners and menus at Michael's On East, we suggest pairing Pinotage with robust Mediterranean dishes, Cape Malay-spiced lamb chops, blackened fish, charcuterie, or even foods with plenty of spice such as curry dishes.Michael's Wine Cellar's own Robin Schwartz first came across Pinotage while living in New Zealand years ago. (Kiwis love their South African wines when not drinking wines from their native country!) Robin participated in a full-day wine trip while she was vacationing in South Africa, stopping by and loving the wines from Fairview Vineyards. In fact, she bought a few bottles of the Fairview Vineyards Pinotage to take home with back then. Luckily for Robin, today we carry the wines from Fairview Vineyards in the store at Michael's Wine Cellar, which are also available for purchase online. We hope you'll stop in the retail shop or try ordering a bottle of the Fairview Vineyards Pinotage from our online wine shop today. Pinotage-LanzeracInterestingly, the Lanzerac Wine Estate is known as the home to the first bottled Pinotage. Steeped in a history dating back to 1692, the Lanzerac Wine Estate is situated at the foot of the majestic Jonkershoek Valley of Stellenbosch in South Africa. If you are ready to try South Africa's original grape varietal IN South Africa, please join us in the summer of 2017 for the Gulf Coast Connoisseur Club's "A Taste of Africa" trip escorted by Michael and Terri Klauber of Michael's On East and Ryan Hilton of Admiral Travel International.) The Lanzerac Wine Estate is just one of numerous winery experiences available during this exclusive food and wine-focused and luxury safari journey.

Wine Pairings in the Restaurant

PortWineGlassesEach month, the culinary team at Michael's On East is challenged to design a unique menu inspired by the world's most exotic food (and wine!) destination as our wine specialists at Michael's Wine Cellar work hard to select perfect wine pairings for the featured menus. The following wines will be featured in the Restaurant this August, hand-selected to be paired with Chef Jamil and Chef Catherine's Indonesian Epicurean Adventure. Viognier/Chenin Blanc/Grenache Blanc, The Wolftrap, ZA, 2012 Complex flavors of fruit blossom, dried fruit and spice. Rich creamy texture with some minerality and elegant oak nuances. Balanced natural acidity with concentrated flavors that lingers on the palate. Pinot Noir "Light Horse", Jamieson Ranch Vineyards, CA, 2013 This deep garnet Pinot Noir showcases ripe cherry, strawberry and raspberry aromatics that commingle with anise, cinnamon and a hint of white pepper. Sumptuous red berry flavors blossom on the palate, while supple acidity and silken tannins contribute to the wine’s innate elegance.

New Rose: Domaine Tempier

Rose domaine tempier bandolThere's a reason it's called "Michael's Wine Cellar." Michael Klauber himself, our legendary Co-Proprietor who has served as a wine judge and international wine merchant for 30 years, still has his hand - and trusted palate - in the wine buying process for our boutique wine store. This summer, Michael directed our wine specialists to bring in "the grandfather of all rosé wine." Allow our team to introduce you to this fine rosé from one of the most famous estates for rosé in Provence, France. Rose, Domaine Tempier, Bandol, FR, 2015 $42.95 (Click here to purchase online.)
Tasting Notes
The presence of Mourvedre gives this wine its strong character, balance and complexity. An intense fruit and floral nose make this an attractive rosé.The palate is rounded and full with fruity aromas of peach and pomegranate, followed by delicate spice notes and a pleasant freshness created by acidic balance and complexity.
Domain Tempier Bandol Rose Located in the heart of the Bandol terrior, Domaine Tempier was already in existence during the reign of Louis XV (1715-74). The house was built in 1834 and the estate gained recognition in 1885 when it won its first gold medal. The architect of this rebirth in the wake of the phylloxera epidemic that had devastated France's vineyards was Leonie Tempier, who replanted the vines on rootstocks and in 1880 had a barrel cellar and cement fermentation tanks built. The grapes used for this rosé come from selected parcels where the vines are on average 20 years old.
Wine Spectator (91 Points)
“Bright white cherry and watermelon rind notes are pure and racy, gaining a light savory hint through the finish and showing an echo of white pepper. Pure, with latent depth, this should go into reserve for fall and winter drinking. Drink now through 2017.”

LEARN MORE ABOUT GLENMORANGIE DIRECTLY FROM THE SOURCE: THE TALLEST STILLS Our stills are the tallest in Scotland. Their long copper necks stand at 16ft 10 1/4 inches (the same height as a fully grown adult giraffe!) Which means that only the very purest vapors make it to the top, giving a smoother, more elegant whisky. THE FINEST CASKS At Glenmorangie we select the nest oak casks in which to mature our whisky. But that’s not all because we then only use each cask twice for Original (whilst many others use their up to ve or six times), this ensures that the maximum amount of avor is always extracted during maturation, delivering a rounder and more complex taste. Glenmorangie has been pioneering the technique of extra maturation in order to perfect the different nishes of our whiskies and bring new avors to our range. THE MEN OF TAIN Glenmorangie’s story is not just about whisky, it’s also about people. The 16 Men of Tain are proof of this. Entrusted with the secrets of our distillery, the men use their dedication, skill and attention to ensure Glenmorangie is the most outstanding Single Malt Scotch Whisky. There was a time when the Men of Tain would queue up for a daily dram of whisky with their lunch. Huddled together they would pass around a metal cup - blackened through constant use - and share a joke at the expense of one of the lads. This tradition is still fondly remembered by some of our more long serving men.

Stop & Sip the Rosé

Rose WineThere's nothing quite as good as a chilled glass of rosé wine on a hot day!  Reputations can be tough to shed. Perhaps none are more stubborn than rosés. Why? The wine industry–by cranking out millions of bottles and casks of bland, too-sweet white zinfandel in the 1980s–did its best to kill the notion that pink wine can be a tasty, refreshing, refined drink. Rosé wines can be dry or sweet, with a rose pink color. Rosé is made in the same manner as white wine, but using red grapes. The bunches are picked and crushed, and depending on how long the juice and grape skins sit together in the tank, the more red color is passed on to the juice. The juice is then drained off and fermented separately. The manufacturing process and health benefits of a rosé wine are similar to those associated with white wines, including improved cardiovascular health and potent antioxidants! If you are ready to stop and sip the rosés, we invite you to join us for a special blind tasting this July! Blind Rosé Wine Tasting Tuesday, July 12, 2016 6.30 p.m. at Michael's Wine Cellar: The Tasting Room Join us to taste rosé wines from around the world. Only 20 seats are available. Limited Release: Pluribus Red Blend

The Michael's Wine Cellar team is pleased to announce another limited release wine, available only while supplies last through the store. Call 941-955-CORK (2675), stop in to shop in our retail wine store, or click here to purchase this wine online - quickly! Only six bottles are available of this limited release wine. Pluribus Red Blend WineRed Blend “Pluribus”, Bond Estate, Napa Valley, CA, 2012 $449.95 Tasting Notes: Pluribus expresses the character of an estate located at an elevation over 1,100 feet on the dramatic slopes of Spring Mountain. the name refers to the latin word for many, and was chosen to signify the various facets involved in creating a fine wine: from the sun, soil, and climate of a vineyard, to the team of people who guide a wine through its evolution. A breathtaking mountainous 7-acre site with steep exposures to the north, east and southeast, the soil is comprised of volcanic bedrock. Pluribus, which debuted in the 2003 vintage, is defined as a bold, rich and concentrated wine; elements of dark plum, roasted coffee, and scents of cedar are inherent throughout the vintages. Our enduring vision at BOND is to create a portfolio of wines that are diverse in their geographic representation and “Grand Cru” in quality, all under the umbrella of one philosophy, one team, one mark. Sourced from select hillside estates, the Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines of BOND vividly demonstrate the range of Napa Valley’s finest terroirs. From the more than sixty vineyards we have worked with over the past quarter century we have slowly and vigilantly selected five sites. BOND became our covenant and shared commitment to produce only the best expression of the land. The Wine Advocate (95+) “From a 7-acre parcel on Spring Mountain, the 2012 Pluribus Proprietary Red Wine exhibits the white flowers (acacia?), blueberry and black raspberry fruit that comes from this high elevation site. It is full-bodied but very tannic, backward, coiled and relatively tight, behaving in that sense more like a 2013 than a 2012. This wine is set for a long life of 30+ years. Forget it for another 4 or 5 years, then consume it over the following three decades.”

Rhetoric 22 Year Bourbon

Featured-Items-Rhetoric-June2016We're pleased to announce another opportunity to buy a limited release Whiskey from the Store! Bourbon “Rhetoric”, Orphan Barrel, 22 Year, 750ml $129.95
Ten steps ahead in a dance of discourse, Rhetoric candy-coats and compels with equal amounts of art. Proper, eloquent, and poetic, this Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey speaks a language to which you could listen for hours. Each sip starts with a smoky, leathery nose that translates into vanilla oak, toasted rye, and dried fruits, and concludes with a long, full finish of cherry blossom and bitter chocolate. An ever-changing specimen, Rhetoric is an experiment in how barrel maturation imparts a lasting impression year after year. Each new year results in an older and wiser limited release from remaining maturing stock. A conversation piece if there ever was one.

Tasting Notes:
Sourced from hand selected blocks, this muscular cab shows concentrated notes of cassis and espresso with cool herbal aromas of lavender and wet earth. The brooding palate leads with blueberries, dark chocolate, and minerality. Finishing with stunning intensity, the polished tannins are complemented by graphite and hints of cigar box.
Meticulous vineyard management followed by minimally-invasive winemaking techniques allows us to produce wines that express their vineyard origins with finesse, complexity and authenticity. Paul Hobbs wines are fermented with native yeasts, aged in French oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard has a Mission Haut-Brion-on-steroids character, as it seems to be all gravel pit. Loads of wet pebbles, graphite, blueberry and blackberry fruit, a full-bodied opulence, and just a killer, skyscraper-like mouthfeel and stunning finish make for one of the most provocative and fabulous wines in this portfolio. Drink it over the next 25+ years. This is world-class and can stand up against anything made in 2013, as could the following wines as well.”
