Our team was thrilled to welcome Brian Baker of Chateau Montelena to Michael's Wine Cellar this past week as he hosted a special wine dinner on Tuesday, February 3, 2015.
Typically, we gather guests around one long, candlelit table for these special wine dinner affairs. The single table, for just 38 guests, is an impressive sight and allows for the visiting winemaker to truly host the event at "his" table."
We had an overwhelming response to Chateau Montelena enthusiasts anxious to attend this special event featuring the classic, ageworthy wines from this historic Napa winery... For good reason!
"In 1976 Chateau Montelena helped put California at the forefront of the wine world. That year a who's-who of the French wine and food establishment gathered for a grand tasting at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Paris.
Four white Burgundies were tasted against six California Chardonnays. When the scores were tallied, the French Judges were convinced that the top-ranking white wine was one of their own. In fact, it was Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay, rated above all other wines. The results proved that Chateau Montelena could produce some of the world's finest wines, and that California's wine industry had come of age."
On this particular evening earlier in the week, guests were delighted with an added surprise host at our wine dinner event!
George Taber, author of Judgement of Paris, was gracious enough to share a few remarks with our guests.
"Judgment of Paris is the story of the comeback of California wine from the disaster of Prohibition to the
victory in 1976 of Napa wines at a tasting in Paris, where nine of France’s most esteemed judges scored
a California red and a white as better than the best France had to offer."
