National Rosé Day: June 10, 2017

Rose WineMany Saturdays are special in Sarasota. From fun family events like Splashin’ Saturdays which return this weekend at Selby Gardens and relaxing afternoons at Siesta Beach, to our Open House Wine Tastings at Michael’s Wine Cellar on select Saturdays each month, Sarasota has so much to offer. However, the second Saturday in June is extra special. It is indeed “National Rosé Day!” NATIONAL ROSÉ DAY National Rosé Day is observed annually on the second Saturday in June.  Rosé is probably the oldest known type of wine, dating back as far as 600 BC.  Rosé wines are generally made from red grapes and are very versatile wines that complement many types of food. Rosé is lighter than red wine and deeper than white wine.  The pink color of Rosé wine depends on the time the grape skin stays in contact with the juice, also known as maceration.  There are Rosé wines that are semi-sparkling or sparkling with different intense of sweetness levels and dryness. HISTORY National Rosé Day was submitted to and approved by the registrar of National Day Calendar in October of 2014 by Bodvár – House of Rosés– a Rosé House specializing in Rosé wines to raise awareness and give Rosé lovers a day to celebrate with “summer’s water.” Stop in the store to pick up a special bottle to toast National Rosé Day this Saturday. Michael’s Personal favorite rosé wines: ROSE, DOMAINE DE LA PETITE CASSAGNE, FR, 2016 $9.95 This salmon colored rosé is very flavorful. This wine displays hints of spice and fruit notes of cranberry, strawberry and cherry. Domaine de la Petite Cassagne is located four kilometers from the village of St Gilles on south/south-eastern exposed slopes of the Costières de Nîmes. The soils here are characterized by cailloux deposited by the Rhône River centuries ago. ROSE, DOMAINE SAINT AIX, PROVENCE, FR, 2016 $16.95 Tasting Notes: You will notice tremendously vibrant and summery taste. AIX has a bright, pale-pink color and has a delicate balance of crisp acidity and soft, ripe summer fruit. The 130 years old winery of Maison Saint AIX is situated in the south of France.  With over 300 days of sunlight per year and cooler nights the grapes allow for optimal maturation.  South western exposure and the common Mistral Wind makes a perfect protection for the vines, drying them after the rain or dew.  All things considered, Maison Saint AIX has the perfect conditions for a leading rose. "Shows good zip, but delivers more white cherry and strawberry core notes up front than through the finish, where a light savory hint lingers." Wine Spectator: 86 ROSE, WOLFFER ESTATE, LONG ISLAND, NY, 2016 $18.95 Winemaker's Notes: Light copper-salmon in color. Pure and fresh floral and flinty aromas fill the glass. The mouth-feel is filled with fruit notes of peach and apricots. The mouth-feel is fresh and vibrant with lively acidity and well balanced, satisfying fruit. The finish is classic--dry with subtle, fine tannins and minerality, making it food-friendly and versatile. Winemaking is at the heart of all we do at Wölffer. The process begins in the vines, where Vineyard Manager Richie Pisacano meticulously manages our 55 pristine acres of vines. We grow Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and small lots of Trebbiano, Pinot Noir and Vignole. We use sustainable farming practices, and are proud to be among the few vineyards that are certified as sustainable by Long Island Sustainable Winemaking.

Gift of Crios for Mother's Day

Crios Rose WineIn a country dominated by male winemakers, Susana Balbo stands out not only for her gender, but for her incredible skill and experience. She has been making wine since she earned her enology degree in 1981, and she has probably produced a wider variety of wines than any other winemaker in Argentina. Susana was the first Argentine winemaker to be hired as a consultant to make wine outside of Argentina. She has made wine in Australia, California, Chile, France, Italy, South Africa, and Spain, and she spends a month each year in a different wine region of the world studying with local winemakers and growers. After 25+ years of winemaking, Susana Balbo has a strong sense of what she wants from her wines. From every harvest, she creates the grandest possible wines under her Susana Balbo label. To achieve this, she makes a rigorous selection of the finest barrels prior to making her final blends, dividing them into the parents (reserve level wines) and offspring or "crios". Wines under her Crios label display ripe fruit flavors, excellent balance and concentration, and are meant to be enjoyed in their vibrant youth. After 22 years of winemaking, Susana Balbo has a strong sense of what she wants from her wines. From every harvest, she creates the grandest possible wines under her Susana Balbo label. To achieve this, she makes a rigorous selection of the finest barrels prior to making her final blends, dividing them into the parents (reserve level wines) and offspring or "crios." The Crios wines also offer incredibly good value - and are perfect gifts for Mother's Day. Like Susana's own crios (a boy and a girl), they are extremely lovable and fun to be around. The label features a series of three connected and overlapping hands, an image inspired by a Mayan artifact, and represents Susana and her children, José and Ana. The artifact illustrates the interconnectedness of every generation, and the irony that we will be both the parent and the offspring at different times in our lives. In 2011, Susana passed the winemaking reins for Crios to her own son, José Lovaglio, a graduate of UC Davis. Admission includes a selection of hors d'oeuvres and tastes of seven Adelsheim wines: Pinot Gris, Adelsheim, Willamette Valley, OR, 2011 Crisp, bright flavors have always been the hallmark of Adelsheim Pinot gris. In this 2012, you’ll find hints of papaya, apples and pears. It pulls off the difficult feat of providing a gentle creaminess that lends a rich, mouthfilling texture and long finish, yet still impressing as a wine that’s crisp and clean. Try it with mildly spicy foods (such as ceviche), not so mildly spicy Thai cuisine, rich fishentrees, and even classic oven-roasted fowl. It would pair well with crab salad or cured salmon with tarragon dressing.  Rose, Adelsheim, Willamette Valley, OR, 2011 This delicious wine offers aromas of fresh strawberries, raspberries, peach, watermelon and a touch of baking spices. The aromas follow through on a rich, well textured palate that offers great intensity and persistence to the finish. Though a perfect summer beverage on its own, this Rosé will pair with all manner of that season’s meals, from bouillabaisse and grilled shrimp, to goat cheese, ham and poultry entrees. Pinot Noir, Adelsheim, Willamette Valley, OR, 2011 With its broad array of origins and clones, this wine displays red aromas (candied cherry, pomegranate and raspberry) on the nose and the palate. In addition, one finds a light touch of brown spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, all-spice). True to our house style, it is elegantly textured with seamlessly integrated, silky, polished tannins. Pair it with salmon or ahi, veal or pork, poultry (think duck) or beef, or hearty vegetarian entrees. Pinot Noir "Elizabeth's Reserve", Adelsheim, Willamette Valley, OR, 2010 The name “Elizabeth’s Reserve” was first used in 1986 to designate the blend of our best barrels of Pinot noir. From 1987 until 1999 it designated a single vineyard wine, but in 2000 returned to a “best of winery” reserve - the best barrels from our best lots. Most of the fruit for this wine (65%) comes from five of our estate vineyards located on south-facing slopes of the Chehalem Mountains and Ribbon Ridge. With many wonderful lots representing different soil types, clones, site climates, fermenter sizes, and barrel characteristics, winemaker Dave Paige pulls to- gether those that best create a reserve level wine, one that truly reflects the vintage and character of our corner of the Willamette Valley. This wine is both elegant and intense, offering layered aromas of red raspberries, fresh Oregon strawberries, brown spice and cedar. Its aromas are reflected on a pal- ate that speaks of purity and elegance, and is exception- ally balanced with silky tannins and a persistent finish. This wine will pair beautifully with the Pinot noir classics - lamb, duck, grilled salmon, and aged cheeses. Pinot Noir "Deglace", Adelsheim, Willamette Valley, OR, 2011, 375ml Even with this sweet wine, we stay true to our winery philosophy that a wine’s highest use is in pairing with meals. That means retaining enough of the grapes’ natural acidity to ensure that the wine never becomes too cloying. Our Deglacé has amazing strawberry shortcake, citrus blossom, and nectarine aromas that meld with the viscous yet firm texture on the palate. Adelsheim Vineyard Wines David Adelsheim, president of the Willamette Valley's Adelsheim Vineyard, will host a special wine tasting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23 at Michael’s Wine Cellar, 1283 South Tamiami Trail, Midtown Plaza in Sarasota. The event is open to the public for $20/person, and all attendees will receive $20 off Wine Cellar purchases of $100 or more made on Sept. 23. The Adelsheim Vineyard team strives to make wines of elegance and balance, wines that reflect the unique flavors and textures that grow in the Willamette Valley. They use a restrained approach that relies on decades of experience to express the uniqueness of each vineyard and each vintage. Established in 1971 by David and Ginny Adelsheim, the family-owned and operated winery and estate vineyards are located in Oregon’s northern Willamette Valley. Over the past 41 years, the Adelsheim Vineyard estate has grown to include eleven exceptional vineyard sites throughout the Valley, totaling 237 acres.
