Bordeaux Futures

Bourdeaux Grapes

What Are Bordeaux Futures?

Futures, or en primeur, as it’s called in Bordeaux, is a method of purchasing a specific vintage of wine in advance, before it is bottled and released in the market. In early April each year, industry professionals gather in Bordeaux for the Unions des Grand Cru tastings (UGC), where they taste through barrel samples. Then the en primeur campaign begins and based on the quality of the wine, prices are set about 18 months before the wine is released in the general market.

Why Buy Bordeaux Futures?

  • To purchase wines at the initial release prices. Wines re-released after bottling or sold at retail in an excellent vintage will usually be considerably more expensive.
  • To secure allocations of small-production wines that may not be commercially available after “En Primeur” release. When these are gone, they are gone!
  • To own wine from the start of its life – provenance is priceless. You know that you bought it and have controlled its storage from the beginning.
  • To purchase a birth year vintage for a child, grandchild or godchild.
  • To purchase a wedding year vintage.
  • To purchase the latest vintages of a Château that you have followed and purchased over the years.

How Does It Work?

Bordeaux futures are an investment and basically, work like other market-traded commodities. Investors buy wine that has not yet reached the market. This allows the investor to obtain a potentially rare wine, at a bargain, then watch it increase in value. The wine is still in the barrels, unbottled, and won't be released for 12 to 18 months. Wine will begin to arrive after about 2 years.

Many of these wines have very limited availability. Purchases are on a first-come-first-served basis and are available by the solid case only (12 bottles unless otherwise noted). Bottle prices are displayed for comparison purposes only and do not indicate that these wines are available by the bottle.

La Fleur de Bouard

LaFleurdeBouardWe’re thrilled to announce that Coralie de Boüard of La Fleur de Boüard in Bordeaux will be joining us again in Sarasota for our Forks & Corks Retail Wine Tasting, 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, January 30. Coralie will join more than a dozen international winery owners and winemakers at this special tasting event. Click here to make reservations online. Haven't had a chance to meet Coralie during past visits to Sarasota and Michael's Wine Cellar? Here's some background about her family's winery, compliments of TheWineCellarInsider.com: La Fleur de Bouard is owned by the de Bouard family. When Hubert de Bouard purchased the property in 1998, it was called La Fleur Saint Georges. Following the age old custom of renaming a wine after a change in ownership, they rechristened their new property, La Fleur de Bouard. The de Bouard family are well known for their Bordeaux wine vineyards in St. Emilion, which include Chateau Angelus and Chateau Bellevue as well as their estate in the Cotes de Francs appellation, Chateau de-Francs. Hubert de Bouard purchased the estate in 1998 from a French insurance company. 1998 marked the debut vintage for La Fleur de Bouard. However, today Chateau La Fleur de Bouard is managed by Coralie de Bouard, the daughter of Hubert de Bouard. Chateau La Fleur de Bouard sits on the plateau of Lalande de Pomerol in Neac, which is not far from Pomerol. The terroir is clay and sandy soil with a base of gravel underneath. The 25 hectare vineyard of La Fleur de Bouard is planted to 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vine density is 6,500 vines per hectare in the oldest vines. However, new plantings take place at 8,500 vines per hectare. The average age of the vines at La Fleur de Bouard is 25 years old. However, they have old vines that are close to 45 years of age in their vineyards as well. In 2011, La Fleur de Bouard completed a multi-year reconstruction of their entire wine making making facilities and the chateau, making this one of the most modern estates in the Right Bank. The most striking new feature is their hanging, reverse, stainless steel, conical vats. To produce the wine of La Fleur de Bouard, the grapes go through a pre-fermentation, cold maceration at 10 degrees Celsius and a 3-4 week maceration in stainless steel tanks. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation is performed in a combination of 75% new oak barrels, 15% one year old barrels and 10% takes place in tank. The wine is aged on its lies in 75%, new French oak barrels for between 18-24 months, depending on the character of the vintage. The blend for Chateau La Fleur de Bouard is usually quite close to the planted acreage. Chateau La Fleur de Bouard produces a special cuvee called La Plus La Fleur de Bouard. The grapes come from a small, 2 hectare parcel of very old Merlot vines planted in their clay soils. This high quality, character filled wine is the perfect ringer for a Pomerol tasting. It is the benchmark for any wine from the Lalande de Pomerol appellation. The blend of La Fleur de Bouard as well as that of Le Plus varies depending on the vintage. It ranges from 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc to almost 100% Merlot. However, for Le Plus, the majority of the time, it’s usually closer to 100% Merlot, while La Fleur de Bouard is closer to the vineyard plantings. There is a second wine, La Fleur Saint Georges. The average annual production for La Fleur de Bouard is close to 7,000 cases per year.

Tim's Bordeaux Picks

Bordeaux Wine GrapesEach fall, as vintners around the world are tirelessly working to prepare and perform the frenzy of winery activities surrounding the annual harvest, we await the return a special friend at Michael's Wine Cellar in Sarasota. Wine specialist Tim Hart has been a part of the Michael's On East family for more than a decade, but we only have the great fortune of having Tim on-property in the Store during Sarasota's "season." Tim, a semi-retired teacher, professor and entrepreneur, these days works hard serving fellow wine lovers shopping at Michael's Wine Cellar and he deserves his relaxing summers up north. However, we know he loves to return to Sarasota each October, just in time for our monthly Open House Wine Tasting, in fact! You may also know about one of Tim's true loves: Wines from Bordeaux! He's shared just a few of his favorite Bordeaux wines, all available for under $20.00 from Michael's Wine Cellar and michaelswinecellar.com. Tim's Top Value Bordeaux Picks Bordeaux is the largest vineyard appellation in the world. Bordeaux wines are mainly blended from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes with varying proportions of other regional varieties. Many are meant for early drinking, but some producers are making more structured wines that can age for many years. Here are some of Tim's current favorites. Chateau Marjosse Rouge, 2012 18.95 From the home estate of Pierre Lurton, who produces both Chateau d’Yquem and Cheval Blanc, this wine is solidly made and an exceptional value. It is medium-bodied with rich black cherries and spice flavors. It is a very seductive wine with an excellent balance of fruit and acid. I believe this is the best Marjosse Rouge wine I have ever tasted. It’s been my personal house red wine for 2015! Chateau Marjosse Blanc, 2013 18.95 This wine is considered a White Bordeaux, again from Pierre Lurton's estate. It is blended from equal parts of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes. It’s crisp, fresh and lively with citrus and white flower notes. It has just the right amount of grapefruit and lime on the palate. Chateau Tour St. Bonnet, 2010 19.95 The Wine Advocate (WA) calls this wine a “ beautiful sleeper of the vintage.” The WA goes on to say that it’s a “staggering value” in the world marketplace. This wine possesses classic cedar wood, tobacco leaf, black currant and licorice, in a medium to full-bodied layered style. It’s ready to drink now with no cellaring necessary with this treasure. I have personally enjoyed Chateau Tour St. Bonnet wines for over thirty years.

Bordeaux Vintage Bowl Line-Up

Chateau de Camensac 2009 v 2010 Robert Parker has claimed that the 2009 and 2010 vintages of Bordeaux, along with the older 2005 vintage, may be the best vintages from this region that he has ever tasted. Wines from the 2009 vintage will be more sumptuous, fruit-forward and lower in acidity, exhibiting soaring aromatics and fleshy, exuberant flavors with plush, succulent personalities. 2010 exceeds 2009 with record setting alcohol, but paradoxically its fresh acids, lower pHs and massive tannins have dictated more precision in the mouth. While massive and highly extracted, the 2010s are also fresh and incredibly pure and will enjoy astonishing longevity.  Here's the line-up for this Thursday's Bordeaux 2009 vs 2010 Comparative Tasting: (Space is limited, so be sure to make reservations via phone at 941-366-0007, ext. 229 if you have not already done so!) Chateau Marjosse Blanc, 2012 Bordeaux Superieur $18.95 From the personal estate of Pierre Lurton, winemaker at Chevel Blanc and D’Yquem, this is a juicy white with vibrant gooseberry and passionfruit flavors. Chateau Thieuley Blanc, 2011 Bordeaux Superieur $16.95 White blend of 35% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Sauvignon Gris and 50% sémillon. Chateau Thieuley “Reserve Francis Courselle”, 2010 Bordeaux Superieur 87-89 RP $19.95 This sleeper of the vintage offers plenty of deep red and black currant fruit notes intermixed with cedarwood, subtle smoke and herbs. Chateau Croix Mouton, 2010 Bordeaux Superieur 90 RP $19.95 From winemaker Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this outstanding wine displays sweet, smoky barbecue notes with blackberry and blueberry fruit and hints of licorice, incense and graphite. Chateau Feret-Lambert, 2010 Bordeaux Superieur 89 WS $19.95 Another well-made sleeper of the vintage, the 2010 Feret-Lambert is another wine that over-delivers for its price point. Chateau Le Conseiller, 2010 Bordeaux Superieur 91 RP $21.95 Another sleeper of the vintage from Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this Bordeaux is dominated by Merlot giving it mocha, espresso, sweet black cherry and plum notes. Chateau Le Petit Haut Lafitte, 2010 Pessac-Leognan 91 WS $38.95 Very engaging from the start, with a blast of boysenberry and blackberry fruit, while notes of licorice snap, violet and black tea fill in the background. Chateau Clos les Lunelles, 2010 Castillon 91 RP $38.95 Another sleeper of the vintage, this is a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Chateau D’Aiguilhe, 2010 Castillon 91 RP $39.95 From the brilliant proprietor Stephan von Neipperg, the 2010 is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Chateau Fougas Maldoror, 2009 Cotes de Bourg 90 RP $24.95 A sleeper of the vintage which boasts loads of black currant fruit intermixed with dusty, loamy soil notes and some subtle smoke. Chateau La Prade, 2010 Cotes de Francs 87-89 RP $22.95 Another sleeper of the vintage Bordeaux, made entirely from Merlot by consulting winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt. Chateau Phelan Segur, 2009 St.-Estephe 90 RP $46.95 A sleeper of the vintage. Robert Parker says that this vintage of Ch. Phelan Segur is the best one since the 1990 vintage. Chateau Fontenil, 2009 Fronsac 92 RP $38.95 Dany and Michel Rolland produced one of their best wines of the 2009 vintage with this Ch. Fontenil that is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Chateau Dalem, 2009 Fronsac 89 RP $28.95 Another sleeper of the vintage Bordeaux, consisting of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Robert Parker proclaims that it may be the finest Ch. Dalem produced during his tasting career. Chateau Vrai Canon Bouche, 2009 Fronsac 91 RP $29.95 This sleeper of the vintage was produced by consultant winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt and is a blend of 95% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec. The blend is 70% Merlot with the majority of the remainder Cabernet Franc. Domaine de l’A, 2010 Castillon 90 RP $44.95 From the home estate of Stephane and Christine Derenoncourt, this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc is a sleeper of the vintage. Chateau Camensac, 2009 Haut-Medoc 89 RP $33.95 One of the finest, if not the best, Ch. Camensac ever produced according to Robert Parker with loads of black fruit, cedar wood and spice box. Should drink well through 2025. Chateau Camensac, 2010 Haut-Medoc 89-91 RP $42.95 Even surpassing the 2009, this Bordeaux is likely a sleeper of the vintage according to Robert Parker. Classic Bordeaux notes of tobacco leaf, licorice, currants and oak this should also drink well through 2025. On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree But wouldn't it be lovely if your true love also sent you unbelievable French wines? Chablis, Isabelle & Denis Pommier, FR, 2009 $25.95 Domaine Denis Pommier is a small estate based in the village of Poinchy just west of Chablis. Christmas Wines Day 3: Chateau Thieuley from Bordeaux On the third day of Christmas my true love sent to me: Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree But wouldn’t it be lovely if your true love also sent a few great value Bordeaux wines from Michael Klauber's specialized online wine store: Chateau Thieuley Blanc, Bordeaux Superieur, FR, 2011 $16.95 Clear color. Exotic fruit favours (citrus, pineapple, graprefruit) and flowers aromas. Fresh, round and well balanced. Each variety brings its own caracteristic so that the blend is very successfull. Chateau Thieuley "Reserve Francis Courselle", Bordeaux Superieur, FR, 2010 $19.95 Ratcheting up the level of concentration, this sleeper of the vintage offers plenty of deep red and black currant fruit notes intermixed with cedarwood, subtle smoke and herbs. Medium-bodied and richly fruity with more power than the regular cuvee, it should drink well for 4-5 years. - The Wine Advocate
