Stop & Sip the Rosé

Rose WineThere's nothing quite as good as a chilled glass of rosé wine on a hot day!  Reputations can be tough to shed. Perhaps none are more stubborn than rosés. Why? The wine industry–by cranking out millions of bottles and casks of bland, too-sweet white zinfandel in the 1980s–did its best to kill the notion that pink wine can be a tasty, refreshing, refined drink. Rosé wines can be dry or sweet, with a rose pink color. Rosé is made in the same manner as white wine, but using red grapes. The bunches are picked and crushed, and depending on how long the juice and grape skins sit together in the tank, the more red color is passed on to the juice. The juice is then drained off and fermented separately. The manufacturing process and health benefits of a rosé wine are similar to those associated with white wines, including improved cardiovascular health and potent antioxidants! If you are ready to stop and sip the rosés, we invite you to join us for a special blind tasting this July! Mother's Day: Crios Wines

The Crios wines offer an incredible great value - and are perfect gifts for mom (daughter, grandmother or great-grandmother!) this Mother's Day. Click here to purchase the Crios rosé through our secure online wine shop, or stop in the retail store, Monday - Saturday, 10 a.m to 6 p.m. CriosRose_IMG_7994In a country dominated by male winemakers, Susana Balbo stands out not only for her gender, but for her incredible skill and experience. She has been making wine since she earned her enology degree in 1981, and she has probably produced a wider variety of wines than any other winemaker in Argentina. Susana was the first Argentine winemaker to be hired as a consultant to make wine outside of Argentina. She has made wine in Australia, California, Chile, France, Italy, South Africa, and Spain, and she spends a month each year in a different wine region of the world studying with local winemakers and growers. After 25+ years of winemaking, Susana Balbo has a strong sense of what she wants from her wines. From every harvest, she creates the grandest possible wines under her Susana Balbo label. To achieve this, she makes a rigorous selection of the finest barrels prior to making her final blends, dividing them into the parents (reserve level wines) and offspring or "crios". Wines under her Crios label display ripe fruit flavors, excellent balance and concentration, and are meant to be enjoyed in their vibrant youth. Like Susana's own crios (a boy and a girl), they are extremely lovable and fun to be around. The label features a series of three connected and overlapping hands, an image inspired by a Mayan artifact, and represents Susana and her children, José and Ana. The artifact illustrates the interconnectedness of every generation, and the irony that we will be both the parent and the offspring at different times in our lives. In 2011, Susana passed the winemaking reins for Crios to her own son, José Lovaglio, a graduate of UC Davis. José continues to translate his mother’s vision while bringing his own unique, modern style to the wines. Click here for more details about the Malbec "Crios" Susana Balbo, Mendoza, AR, 2014. Rosé & Red Wine for Valentine's Day

This week, Michael Klauber will be visiting Sarasota's ABC 7 to share a few suggestions regarding rosé and red wines for Valentine's Day with viewers of Suncoast View. Tune in at 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 12 as Michael "sabers" a bottle of sparkling and explains his wine suggestions as Michael, Linda, Bobeth and Stephanie taste the wines with decadent chocolate. Here are just a few of Michael's personal recommendations for your sweetheart: Rose, Domaine de la Petite Cassagne, FR, 2013 $9.95 Petite Cassagne Rose Wine A blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. Super fresh and bright, this summer sipper displays deep flavors of strawberries, minerals and sweet herbs. Domaine de la Petite Cassagne is located four kilometers from the village of St Gilles on south/south-eastern exposed slopes of the Costières de Nîmes. The soils here are characterized by cailloux deposited by the Rhône River centuries ago. "A pure style, with watermelon seed, rose water and white cherry notes lined with a tangy hint and backed by a lingering stony finish." -Wine Spectator Sparkling “Rosa Regale”, Banfi, Brachetto d’Acqui, IT, 2011 $18.95 Rosa Regale In 1979, John and Harry Mariani, family Proprietors of Banfi Vintners, acquired a mid-18th century winery, known as Bruzzone, revitalized it and renamed the facility Banfi Piemonte. Here, with the same detailed care as a century ago, our skilled winemakers produce "Rosa Regale" Brachetto d'Acqui D.O.C.G. This rare Brachetto, a semi-dry, red sparkling wine cherished by the courts of Europe over two centuries ago, owes its reincarnation to Banfi. Rosa Regale is created in one of Italy's smallest production zones, the Brachetto d'Acqui Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, commonly referred to as DOCG. It is crafted from 100% Brachetto grapes grown exclusively at the La Rosa Vineyard in the town of Acqui Terme located in the Piedmont region of Italy. The label features a single red rose, representing the wine's origin from this single vineyard La Rosa estate. Rosa Regale's quality comes from the vineyards. However, since this is a sweet, aromatic wine, winemaking techniques are also essential to preserve the grapes' elegant scent. After a careful harvest, the must is allowed to macerate on the skins for 2 to 3 days, thus resulting in a limited actual alcohol content. In this way, a deep beautiful pink color is obtained, thanks to the time spent in contact with anthocyanin-rich skins. The pressing technique is fundamental to the final result: "soft" and elegant. Rosa Regale is produced using the Charmat process or Metodo Italiano (Italian Method). This method forces the second fermentation to happen in large stainless steel tanks prior to bottling, rather than in the bottle like the traditional méthod champenoise. This process is best used on sparkling wines that are meant to be enjoyed young and relatively fresh. Red Blend "The Chocolate Block" Boekenhoutskloof, Franschhoek, ZA, 2012 $32.95 Chocolate Black Wine The Chocolate Block has a rustic, earthy bouquet with a touch of saddle-leather and Provencal herbs. The palate is smooth and rounded on the entry and is armed with crisp acidity to cut through that plush dark berried fruit interlaced with rosemary, white fennel and white pepper. Very svelte and harmonious towards the slightly oaky finish and demonstrating good length, The Chocolate Block is a well-crafted Rhone(ish) blend from Mark Kent and his team. Founded in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is one of the oldest farms situated up the "Valley" in the Franschhoek foothills. Marc Kent is the winemaker, cellarmaster, and part owner of this homestead and wine farm. "Toasted savory and anise notes lead the way, backed by soft plum and blackberry paste flavors. A toasty hint holds sway on the finish. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Cinsault and Viognier. Drink now." -Wine Spectator Heart Corks Remember, Michael's Wine Cellar will be open 10 am - 6 pm on Valentine's Day this year, Saturday, February 14, 2015. Of course, our adjacent Restaurant Michael's On East will be hosting dozens of couples celebrating Valentine's Day in style on Saturday, February 14. However, the culinary team in the Restaurant invites you to take a month-long Epicurean Adventure to one of the most romantic countries on the globe: France. Michael's French Epicurean Adventure menu offers a two-course lunch for $18.95 or three-course dinner for $34.95 through the month of February. Please note: Epicurean Adventure menus are not available on holidays including Valentine's Day.
